Kick a habit for one week

The South African Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) in Heidelberg is challenging the community to decorate a tree with yellow material to show their support against substance abuse.

In celebration of SANCA Week (22-26 June) the council is kicking off the “Tree of Life” campaign as well as the “Quit one habit for one week” campaign which includes quitting a habit such as sugar, coffee, the internet or anything of your choice for one week. The main goal is to make the community aware of how difficult it can be to kick a habit.
Organisers of SANCA started decorating trees at the SANCA office in 42 Smit Street on May 28. SANCA mascots Serious Sam and Curious George joined in the fun and also decorated a tree. They challenge businesses, residents and schools in Heidelberg to stand up against drug abuse.
The aim of the campaigns are to highlight the increasing problem of substance abuse, remove the stigma attached to people who are dependent on drugs and alcohol, highlight that dependence is a disease that can be treated and to encourage people to make use of SANCA’s programme.
Various businesses in Heidelberg already showed their support. The yellow material can be bought at the SANCA office for R15 per metre.
SANCA is a non-governmental organisation whose major objectives are the prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug dependence. They assist in detox and therapy sessions, support group sessions, referral to in-patient treatment centres and medical assistance. Furthermore, they reach 30 000 people in Heidelberg through awareness and prevention campaigns.
SANCA can be contacted at 016 349 2892 or visit their Facebook page at SANCA Greater Heidelberg.
