Pistorius back in court this week

Johannesburg - Oscar Pistorius’s lawyers and the state are back in court today to battle over his murder sentence at the North Gauteng High Court.

The defence witness in the Oscar Pistorius sentencing proceedings has been cross-examined by Gerrie Nel on behalf of the State.

Professor Jonathan Scholtz from Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital assessed Pistorius and says his mental condition was severe.

He is the first witness the defence has called in mitigation of sentence and he has so far told the court that Oscar Pistorius is not fit to testify.

The athlete’s defence team is also expected to call another witness.

Pistorius is being tried for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on 14 February 2013.

The original trial judge, Thokozile Masipa, is presiding over sentencing arguments.

Pistorius was last seen in public at a court hearing in April when the date of the sentencing was announced.

The Paralympian is to be sentenced for murder, after the Supreme Court of Appeal overturned his manslaughter conviction.
