Local athletes geared for Rio Olympics
NIGEL - Nigel born and bred decathlon athlete Willem Coertzen (ranked number 10 in the world) is on his way to the 2016 Summer Games known as the Rio Olympics, which will take place from 5 to 21 August in Rio de Janeiro.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee on July 14, announced the team of 137 participants that will represent the country at the Rio Olympics.
Willem, who racked up a Rio qualifying total of 8398 at this same meeting last year said:
‘It’s still all good, it just wasn’t my day. I picked up a stomach bug the previous week and although I sorted that out, I got a massive headache the day before competition. Although I took pills to overcome that, I still felt flat and unresponsive.”
He did however, qualify for the Rio Olympics at the Ratingen Championships in Germany last month and is now preparing for the athletics gathering that takes place in less than a month.

HEIDELBERG – Godfrey Khotso Mokoena (31), who hails from Heidelberg (he attended school at Shalimar Ridge Primary School and Nigel High School) will attempt his fourth Olympic games as part of the 137 strong South African team.
Khotso won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and is a former world junior triple jump champion.
Although Khotso struggled in the IAAF Diamond League in Norway on June 9 (he ended in eighth place in the triple jump), he is one of South Africa’s medal hopefuls.
Khotso, Sunette Viljoen, Roland Schoeman, Ryk Neethling and Hendrick Ramaala are the only South Africans who competed at four Olympic Games.
Coertzen has recently joined CNBC Africa for their Road to Rio 2016 segment.
