A group of 20 employees from the Dunnottar-based train-manufacturing company joined forces with the learners, their parents, and community church and NGO members, to clean the school and refurbish desks.

The company initiative is based on honouring Nelson Mandela’s contribution to positive change in South Africa, as well as signalling Gibela’s commitment to local development.

“Part of Mandela’s legacy is the belief that education is a powerful tool that can transform lives. By assisting in the creation of an environment conducive to learning, Gibela is not only fulfilling part of our mandate to support communities but is also contributing towards fulfilling Nelson Mandela’s vision,” Buyiswa Mncono-Liwani (Economic Development Director at Gibela) said.

Gibela had started with the construction of its South African train manufacturing facility at Dunnottar, where 580 new passenger trains will be built for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.  Meanwhile, eight of the first 20 trains currently being built by the company in Brazil have been delivered at PRASA’s Wolmerton depot where they are being tested and commissioned ahead of the start of commercial service of the first new modern train in October 2016.
