“The City of Ekurhuleni has not fully demonstrated its commitment to conserve the environment in the case of the natural wetland situated in Alrapark Extension 3,” DA councillor Wally Labuschagne said.

For the past four years, he continuously pleaded with the local authorities for the rehabilitation of the wetland area, and also to fence it off in order to protect and ensure the existence of the natural legacy.

Also speaking as an environmental activist, Wally said that waste management and pollution in the area are becoming major environmental issues. During a visit to the area on July 19, he emphasised the dilapidated state of the marshland with its banks riddled with domestic waste. It is also evident that water is being extracted from the wetland which according to Wally, points the finger to urban development.

Wetlands play a pivotal role in the management of water flows, including the purification and storage of water, bird- and fishlife. They also control erosion and reduce the severity of droughts and floods by regulating stream flow and recharging underground aquifers.

During a visit to the wetland in Alrapark, a local fisherman said the fish he catches in the marsh is sometimes the only meal he has in days.

“Apart from fencing, community education and involvement is vital in the process of safeguarding natural water resource. The municipality must recognise the fact that its future lies in the upkeep of its natural resources. It should invest in wetlands with the aim of creating a water-based economy,” Wally concluded.

Ndosi Shongwe, the MMC of Gauteng Department of Environmental Development said EMM has allocated an amount of R300 000 in the 2016/17 financial budget for further biodiversity studies and environmental authorisation of the wetland rehabilitation project.
