Bayer SA opens continent’s first seedgrowth centre in Nigel

NIGEL - Bayer South Africa has launched its first multi-million rand SeedGrowth Centre, the first of its kind for the company in Africa, at its local production facility on August 25.

Bayer is a well-established global enterprise with core competencies in the Life Science fields of health care and agriculture and guests and representatives from agricultural companies such as Pioneer, Pannar, Griekwaland Wes Korporasie attended the event.

The facility was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony by Fritz Schnier (head – global seedgrowth centres), Matthias Haug (senior vice president crop science) and Dr Klaus Eckstein (chief executive Beyer Nigel).

Speaking at the opening, Dr Eckstein said Bayer has the opportunity to provide the latest in research at a local level to support farmers to compete globally. He explained that climate change, volatile commodity prices, the growing impact of pests and diseases are some of the risks endangering food security worldwide.

The event drew to a close with live entertainment and a luncheon.
