Vehicle on fire in Pick n Pay parking

"We could have died today," says shocked passenger.

The quick reaction of bystanders and security of the Victorian Centre probably saved three people in a Volkswagen Polo after it caught fire just as they were leaving the parking area.

The people are employees of Heidelberg Hospital and they were on their way to work when the incident happened at around 10:30 today.

Bystanders and security guards immediately grabbed fire extinguishers and focused on the vehicle’s engine where the fire started. “They kept calm and realised that they must extinguish the fire before opening the engine. If they opened the engine, the flames surely would have exploded and the end would have been tragic,” Isabel Deysel (manager) of the centre said.
