Community mourns death of Nigel High matric learner
Randall Gough's body was discovered at his parents’ house in Visagiepark
Family, friends and the schooling community are mourning the unexpected death of 18-year-old Randall Gough, whose body was discovered at his parents’ house in Visagiepark around 12:00 on September 20.
Randall and his twin sister Lee-Anne were born on 7 August 1999 at Suikerbosrand Life Clinic in Heidelberg.
Incidentally, their birth made headline news in Heraut, as they were the first twin babies born in the newly established hospital at the time. It was a proud moment for father Noël and mother Lilian.
Growing up, Randall attended Nigel Primary School and while he could not run a short distance race at the speed and pace of Wayde van Niekerk, his mother said he nonetheless participated in athletics.
“Boeta could never really run very fast, but he always showed up and did his best on the track,” Lilian lovingly recalled his younger years.
Primary school educator Mrs De Beer recognised his talent and started grooming him from a young age to excel in high jump.
Earlier this year, Randall participated in the Gauteng Athletics Championships where he achieved a personal best of 1,95m in the high jump event.
As a result thereof and through guidance of Nigel High School teacher Mrs Kock, Randal was considered to receive a sports bursary at the North West University in 2018.
From the proud display of trophies and medals in his room, it is evident that Randall was a keen athlete. He was also a member of Nigel Football Club and participated in several soccer tournaments the past few years.
“Boeta and his twin sister shared the same circle of friends and he was known for always carrying a smile on his face. He was a healthy, happy young man and lived life to the full. As my son, I will always remember him as being obedient and kind hearted. He left his Boeta-mark in the lives of so many people and he will be gravely missed,” his mother said.
The Gauteng Department of Social Development, Gauteng Department of Education and trauma councillors visited Nigel High School the day after his death, where they provided assistance and counselling to learners and educators.
Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane also visited the Gough family on September 22 to show their support and pay condolences.
“Our family wishes to thank the community and everyone for their support, love and the compassion they showed us in this difficult time – especially Jasper Meintjies, who never left our side that tragic day.
“We are sincerely grateful for every message of condolence, every flower and every hug,” Lilian said.
Randall leaves behind his parents, twin sister and a younger sister Elloise. Family and friends are welcome to attend his funeral service, which will take place at 09:00 on September 30 at Nigel Town Hall.
The motive of his death is unknown and police have meanwhile opened an inquest.
