Final arrangements for the 2018 Unity Parade

This year’s Unity Parade which once again promises to be a spectacular and colourful street parade, will take place in less than three days.

The purpose of the Unity Parade is to create unity and a working relationship between the different NGOs and other role-players, to create awareness among the public with regard to services available to them and to highlight social issues such as disability and elderly care, women and child protection, poverty alleviation, substance abuse, animal protection and crime and unemployment to name a few.

Organisations will build a float representative of their services and will still do a procession through town. The parade will end at Heidelberg Mall, where event organisers will attempt a Guinness World Record.

The aim this year is to break the Guinness World Record for the largest canned food pyramid which will be built at Heidelberg Mall. For this purpose however, over 31 000 cans are needed. The canned food will later be distributed among beneficiaries from the local community. While the pyramid is being built, participating charities will embark with their floats on a 16km route through town to reach out to the community.
The float criteria are based on creativity, whether the float represents the services of the organisation and team spirit.

Raymond Pundleburry, Leon Liebenberg, Yvonne van Coller and two representatives of Bayport Management will be judging the floats.

The rules of participation are as follows:

• there is no limit on the number of floats or vehicles used per organisation, but it will be judged as one;
• the float must fit into one traffic lane;
• the float may cause no damage to the road;
• all participants must adhere to the local authorities and marshals at all times;
• no littering is allowed;
• all organisations must finish the route and be present at the ceremony to be eligible for the cash prize;
• all participants should strictly adhere to the located time frame;
• the judges’ decision is final;
• in the event of a tie between organisations, the judges will deliberate until a winner can be announced;
• all participants must complete an indemnity form that will be collected two days before the event;
• no political branding will be allowed and no distribution of flyers is allowed inside the mall.

The route will be as follows:
Starting point is from Heidelberg Mall, past Multivac, left on Poortjie road, right on Stasie Street, left on Meyer Street, right on AG Visser Street, left on Breë Street, right in Akasia (Mncedwa) Street (Ext 23), right on Denne Avenue, right on Vaaldam Road, left towards the R23, left on HF Verwoerd (R42, left on Wessels Street, left on Bloekomboom Street, left on Sipresboom Street, right on Wessels Street, left in Zebra Street, right in Duiker Street, right on Springbok Street, right on Gemsbok, left on HF Verwoerd Street, left on Voortrekker Street, right on Begeman Street, right on Du Preez Street, left on Merz Street, right on Louw Street, left on Beecham Street, back towards Heidelberg Mall.

The following schools will be passed along this route:
Shalom Ministries, SAVF Pre-School,  Laerskool AG Visser, Lethabo Siyanqoba Primary School, Kiddies Corner Nursery School, (Vaaldam Road), Shalimar Ridge Primary School (on R23, avoiding the entry into taxi rank), Life Ministries, Heidelberg Public School, Laer Volkskool and Hoër Volkskool.
