Music @ Welgelegen hostes it first music concert with the Charl du Plessis Trio

Music@Welgelegen, in conjunction with Steinway Artist Charl du Plessis, proudly hosted the first of a new series of music concerts at its beautiful establishment on September 15.

While Cole Porter (1891–1964) at the age of 21, was writing his first musical comedy scores at Yale University in 1912. Andries Mauritz Mostert (1868–1939), at the other side of the world commissioned Sir Herbert Baker to build Welgelegen Manor on Rietbult Estate near Balfour in South Africa.

For the first time in history these individuals met posthumously at a rather distinguished confluence of music and food in this 106-year-old manor.

Porter’s mahogany Steinway & Sons piano with Louis XVI courtly figures is still in the lobby of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and therefore it seemed apt that Steinway artist. Dr Charl du Plessis performed on a Steinway & Sons piano especially chosen for performance. Just like the grande dame has been restored to her former glory, the music of Cole Porter got a makeover from the two-time SAMA-winning Charl du Plessis Trio.

The fresh arrangements of Porter’s hits like Night and Day and Begin the Beguine had guests in awe. Among the guests who attended our first concert were two descendants of AM Mostert, namely Dirk Mostert and Nico Mostert who were accompanied by their wives.

A century from now, Welgelegen Manor and the evergreen music of Cole Porter will still entertain and bemuse. The night’s musical meandering accompanied by delectable delicatessen fill the corridors of Welgelegen and left all inspired.

Among the guests who attended the first concert at Music@Welgelegen, were Nico Mostert, Dirk Mostert and Derick Kuun.

Music@Welgelegen Concert 2 – Swinging Christmas Carols, with Michael Barrett and TUKS Camerata will take place on December 8.
