MMC of Environmental and Waste affairs visits Alrapark Secondary School
Principal Felicia Lottering pointed out the dilapidated perimeter fence that continues to pose a critical security breach at the school.
NIGEL – Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for environmental and waste management services – Ndosi Shongwe, together with delegates from the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) and district officials from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) visited Alrapark Secondary School on February 1 to observe and assess various issues that were raised over the past few years.
The visit started with a walk about of the school premises by a task team deployed by the CoE, where the principal Felicia Lottering pointed out the dilapidated perimeter fence that continues to pose a critical security breach at the school. The township is known for drug related crimes and Ms Lottering mentioned that drug dealers would often approach learners through the openings of the palisade fence.

Other concerns included the fact that the school does not have an assembly hall for learners, nor does it have a science lab, classrooms are overcrowded (the current ratio is one educator for around 57 learners), and long veld grass adjacent to the school pose a hazardous environment as learners regularly encounter snakes in the school premises. These issues were pointed out to the GDE.
Ms Lottering further requested assistance in the form of training for educators to provide emergency medical assistance to learners, when necessary.
After a briefing in the staffroom to discuss what steps will be taken to alleviate the school’s plight in a collaborated effort between the CoE and GDE, councillor Shongwe surprised a total of 100 learners by presenting them with new school uniforms, shoes and dignity packs.
In conclusion of the ceremonial affair, the school choir performed a musical rendition whereafter delegates were treated to lunch.
