In the January 27 edition, Heraut reported about an activist against farm murders, Petrus Phakamile Sitho, who visited farmers in the Heidelberg, Nigel and Grootvlei areas.
Petrus, who stays in East London, informed Heraut that he is walking from his home town to the Union Building in Pretoria with one goal in mind, to see President Ramaphosa and talk to him about farm killings.
“The ongoing farm murders must stop. If our farmers are killed, soon we will have no food,” Petrus said.
Petrus is internationally well known as an activist against farm murders and appeared on several radio stations and media houses to create broad awareness of the killings of farmers in South Africa. Petrus stated that he receives life-threatening phone calls daily.
“I stand firm in my faith and know that God will protect me,” he said.
Petrus will walk more than 1 000km but is adamant to see the president in person.
He started his walk on April 6 and it is estimated that it will take him 22 days to reach his destination, walking at eight hours per day.
With a banner ‘Stop farm murders. Enough is enough’ and a slogan ‘No food, no farmer, no future’, he is walking with two volunteer activists, Sakkie Qave from East London and Phule Tlali from Bultfontein. Petrus appealed to the community for assistance in a form of accommodation on route, food and water, walking shoes or any other form of support.
“I am the voice for our farmers. We must unite. I want to know what the president is doing about the farm murders. I am not scared of threatening phone calls as I know God will protect me,” Petrus said.
