Media statement regarding land invasion in Obed Nkosi
Mayor of Lesedi Local Municipality Mluleki Nkosi released a media statement regarding the land invasion and stands in Obed Nkosi and its surroundings.
“The office of the mayor would like to respond to media statements on social media instigating land invasion in Obed Nkosi.
“We intend to refute and discourage any illegal activity of invading open spaces in Obed Nkosi and adjacent areas.
“The concern and frustration of acquiring land for development is noted and the community is conscientised that the matter is receiving adequate attention within the confines of existing legislation.
“The untruth purporting the involvement of the political leadership of the municipality borders on contempt and is detrimental to the integrity and persons implicated therein. Perpetrators of such innuendos are encouraged to desist from making false and frivolous accusations.
The municipality has always discouraged illegal activities on its property whereby transgressions have been served with notices to demolish and abandon such practices.
“This is done in pursuance of the Municipal Spatial Planning and Land Use Management by-laws.
“It is further our posture to approach issues in a developmental and non-confrontational manner.
“Our doors remain open to deliberate and engage on community concerns. It is a matter of procedure that any permission to use municipal property should be an administrative exercise and can only be done after a council resolution has been secured.
“Perpetrators of lawless conduct are warned that council will not hesitate to invoke prosecutions should invasions take effect.”
