Get to know our people: Rain Hyde

Rain Hyde (22) from Heidelberg is best known for giving ballet lessons in town.

HERAUT spoke to Rain to get to know her better.

How long have you been doing ballet?

Since I was five years old. From my first lesson with Vida Deminey, I was completely enthralled with the art form and haven’t looked back since. My mum always said she knew since the first few classes that this was going to be my career. I am so grateful to her for making so many opportunities for me to dance and teach.

What made you fall in love with the sport?

I can’t pinpoint the exact moment or reason because it’s been such a constant joy in my life from a young age. One of the reasons I love it is because it allows you to express yourself artistically, creatively and emotionally, while still at its core being a physical form of art that demands utmost control of your body when performing intricate technical steps. It’s also a form of escapism that allows you to clear your mind and just enjoy the movements.

How long have you been an instructor?

Officially, this is my fourth year teaching. However, I have assisted with classes ever since I was a young teenager, building up hours and experience to prepare me for my Dance Academy of South Africa teacher’s course, which I completed in 2019.

What do you think ballet teaches us?

Ballet teaches us so much. Physically it instils a good posture in students, as well as a strength and suppleness that can be seen even years after you stop dancing. You learn to respect your body, how to strengthen it and nurture it, as it’s your tool to create beautiful art. It also teaches students about self-discipline and consequences, as you only see results if you put in the hard work.

Where do you like to go on holiday?

The beach is always my favourite place to go on holiday. But I would love to go to the Netherlands one day. Of course, I would have to plan my trip to coincide with a performance by the Dutch National Ballet.

Besides ballet, which is your favourite hobby?

I love baking. It is a fun hobby I use to unwind and relax. When I’m not in the studio, you can find me in the kitchen.

What is your favourite animal and why?

If I had to pick just one, I would probably say cats. For me, they are the best companion to come home to after a long day of dancing.

What message do you want to give to the younger generation?

Have courage and be kind. Kindness costs you nothing and the smallest act of kindness from you can change someone’s day.
