Hijackings remain a concern for SAPS
Another concern is false reports that SAPS receive regarding hijackings.
Heidelberg station commander Col Phiwe Ndwandwe briefed media role players in Heidelberg regarding reoccurring crimes in the area on On March 16.
Ndwande said the SAPS wants to work closely with the various media stakeholders to fight crime in the area.
“Hijackings are a major concern in Heidelberg. It occurs mainly on the N3, and the modus operandi is mostly hitchhikers who either hold the driver at gunpoint to confiscate the vehicle or are part of a gang.”
Another concern is the false reports that SAPS receive regarding hijackings.
“The community needs to ensure whatever they report is factual and correct.”
Ndwandwe is appealing to the community to be part of the solution by reporting criminal activities.
Ndwandwe appealed for drivers not to pick up anyone they are not familiar with.
“Hitchhiking is illegal and will be dealt with by the SAPS to the full extent of the law.”
Ndwandwe said residents in Bergsig need to be on the lookout for a white bakkie with up to four occupants robbing and terrorising the community.
“The incidents are not time specific and happen during the day and night. If you are aware of any illegal or criminal activities, contact your nearest police station.”
