City of Ekurhuleni steps up efforts to secure water supply
The completion of two major water infrastructure projects forms part of the CoE’s efforts to improve water security, with 21 more facilities nearing completion
The City of Ekurhuleni has expanded its water storage capacity with the completion of a new water tower in Kempton Park and a reservoir in Benoni.
The projects include the 2-megalitre Kempton Park Water Tower and the 25-megalitre Fairleads Reservoir, which will add to the city’s existing water infrastructure and support its bulk water storage network.
According to the city, the additions bring its water infrastructure network to 103 reservoirs and 41 water towers.
A further 16 reservoirs and five water towers are in the final stages of completion and are expected to be commissioned as part of efforts to expand the network.
According to CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the additional infrastructure will increase water storage capacity and help support a more reliable supply to residents.
The municipality has also highlighted its recognition as Gauteng’s water champion municipality, attributing this status to its efforts to provide residents with safe and sufficient drinking water within its bulk supply allocation.
“Maintaining water security also requires responsible consumption,” said Dlamini.
“We are appealing to residents and businesses to play their part in protecting available resources.”
Residents and businesses are encouraged to:
• Use water sparingly and avoid unnecessary consumption.
• Repair leaking taps and pipes promptly.
• Report burst pipes to the relevant municipal departments.
• Avoid wasting water wherever possible.
“Protecting water resources and maintaining a reliable supply requires a collective effort, with infrastructure investment and responsible water use both playing an important role in ensuring long-term water security,” said Dlamini.
