On April 19, an Indigent Roadshow was launched in Ratanda by Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) Mayor Mluleki Nkosi, with MMC for Finance Marshel Lukhele and Clr MJ Khubeka of Ward One.
The launch was for the Indigent Subsidy Registration that LLM will be embarking on for the next six weeks.
In his speech, Nkosi explained what the subsidy entails.
“The indigent policy provides relief to a degree to successful applicants by supplying 6kl of water, 50kw of electricity per hour, basic services like refuse removal, sewage removal,” he said.
“Even though the services mentioned are free, it still comes at a cost to LLM.
“The costs have amounted to R2.1-million per month and annually R18.3-m for the services mentioned.
“On register, we have 4 100 indigents throughout the whole Lesedi municipal area.
“Households who qualify will benefit to an amount or R598.89 per month on the subsidy.”
Nkosi encouraged the community who can pay their full municipal accounts to do so and prioritise it above any other monthly payments.
“As we register the indigents who can’t afford to pay, we encourage the ones who can to pay for the services they are using,” concluded Nkosi.
“Let us pay for services to avoid Heidelberg and Ratanda to be turned into a town no one wants to live in anymore.”
