Local police officer murdered

Sgt Robert Tebogo Malete was shot outside his home on April 20.

A case of murder has been opened after Duduza SAPS officer Sgt Robert Tebogo Malete was shot outside his home in Bluegum View on April 20.

Malete stopped at his residence and exited his vehicle, a white Isuzu bakkie, to open the garage.

When he returned to his vehicle to gather his belongings, including his bulletproof vest, a white Honda Ballade drove past and shots were fired from the vehicle.

Malete was shot in the upper body and on the back of his leg and succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
Around seven cartridges were found on the scene.

Although the number of occupants in the Honda remains unknown, one of the occupants got out of the vehicle and removed Malete’s service pistol, along with several rounds of ammunition, before getting back in the vehicle and driving away from the scene.

The motive for the crime is unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
