Cambridge FC edge Alberton after Germiston frustration in SAFA Ekurhuleni fixtures
Cambridge FC endured a challenging long weekend in SAFA Ekurhuleni action, drawing away to Waki FC before securing a win over Alberton FC on April 27, as the Nigel side battled poor conditions and missed chances across both fixtures.
NIGEL – Cambridge FC returned from a demanding SAFA Ekurhuleni league programme with three points from a possible six after a congested weekend fixture schedule that saw the Nigel-based side complete two away matches over the long weekend.
Their campaign began in Germiston against relegation-threatened Waki FC, where Cambridge drew 1–1 in difficult conditions. The visitors made a strong start, showing attacking intent and early control of possession, but struggled to implement their usual patient build-up style due to a heavily affected pitch surface.
Despite dominating the opening stages, Cambridge were punished for a defensive lapse when Waki broke the offside line and took the lead in the 25th minute. The visitors responded with sustained pressure and created several scoring opportunities, but were unable to find an equaliser before halftime.
The second half saw Cambridge continue to dictate play and push forward in search of a leveller, but wasteful finishing proved costly, forcing them to settle for a share of the points. On April 27, Cambridge FC travelled to face Alberton FC in their second fixture, a side they had previously drawn 0–0 with in Mackenzieville earlier in the season.
This time, Cambridge produced a dominant display, controlling possession and dictating the tempo for long periods. However, they were repeatedly denied by an inspired performance from the Alberton goalkeeper, who made a series of crucial saves to keep the hosts in the match.
Despite creating multiple clear chances in the first half, Cambridge went into the break frustrated after failing to convert their dominance into goals, but they eventually secured a 1–0 victory.
Cambridge FC chairperson Ignatius Maphike expressed disappointment over the weekend’s playing conditions and officiating standards, saying both negatively impacted the flow and quality of football.
“The Germiston pitch was not suitable for proper play, and the inconsistent refereeing decisions disrupted the rhythm of the match. The performance against Alberton FC demonstrated quality, discipline, and resilience despite ongoing challenges in front of goal,” he said.
