Heidelberg SAPS alert residents to app scam after victim loses R257 500
Heidelberg police are warning residents about a new fraud scheme involving a fake mobile app used to allegedly access victims’ banking details, resulting in one case where R257 500 was stolen through unauthorised loan transactions.
Heidelberg SAPS is warning residents to be cautious following a reported fraud scheme involving a suspicious mobile application targeting members of the public.
Police say the incident occurred in the area on June 25, where a man and a woman were allegedly seen promoting a so-called rewards programme.
Members of the public were reportedly approached and encouraged to download an application on their mobile phones and take a selfie as part of a registration process.
Shortly after interacting with the pair, one victim reportedly received a call from his bank informing him that a loan application had been submitted and approved in his name. The victim denied any knowledge of the application.
Upon visiting the bank the following day, the victim discovered that R257 500 had been withdrawn.
A review of the account statement further revealed approximately 11 transactions linked to the fraudulent activity.
Police have since opened a fraud case and confirmed that investigations are underway. The fraudsters remain unknown and at large.
Authorities have urged the public not to download unfamiliar applications, not to share personal information, and to be wary of individuals offering unsolicited rewards or requiring selfies or verification steps outside official banking or verified platforms.
Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.
