A multi-agency crime prevention operation conducted on July 24 targeted illegal informal settlements identified as criminal hotspots in Heidelberg, Shalimar Ridge and Rensburg.

The initiative, known as Operation Cleanse Heidelberg, was coordinated by the Heidelberg Detective Unit with the support of the SAPS and the Rensburg Forum.

According to the Rensburg Forum, the operation focused on removing illegal structures erected behind businesses and along riverbanks.

These sites were allegedly being used for criminal activities, including the possession and sale of drugs, the planning of crimes, break-ins, illegal fires, littering and other activities that posed risks to nearby businesses and residents.

During the operation, police and community volunteers identified and targeted several key hotspots across Heidelberg Central, Shalimar Ridge and Rensburg.

Several illegal structures believed to have been used as hideouts for criminal activities were dismantled. Officers also confiscated drugs and other dangerous items found during the operation.

One suspect was arrested on a charge of possession of drugs after police allegedly discovered narcotics inside a vehicle in which a minor was also present.
