Three more arrested for business robbery in Nigel

The three handed themselves over at the Nigel Police Station.

Three more members of SAPS have been arrested in connection with the LM Café robbery in town.

During the robbery, which took place on July 15, employees of the business were assaulted, goods stolen, and the property was damaged.

Seven other SAPS members were arrested on July 28 and appeared in the Nigel Magistrates Court on July 31.

According to Robbie Raburabu, the national spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the three new arrests came after the officers handed themselves over at the Nigel Police Station.

The three are all members of the Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence Unit.

The three members are expected to appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on August 21 and will face charges of robbery, defeating the ends of justice and malicious damage to property.

The police members are accused of targeting the business under the pretext that they were conducting a raid to flush out illegal cigarettes.

With the seven other members added, the accused allegedly assaulted the business manager, destroyed property, including a digital video recorder, and stole more than R150 000 cash.

The members also allegedly confiscated more than 150 boxes of cigarettes but only handed in a fraction of that as evidence.
