Law enforcement concerned about increased hijackings

The police also warn against falsely reporting crimes.

The police are concerned about the increased hijackings on the N3 highway between Durban and Johannesburg.

Heidelberg SAPS station commander Colonel Phiwe Ndwandwe appealed to drivers not to stop under any circumstances or give lifts to hitchhikers.

“The hitchhikers could be part of a gang prevalent on the routes for hijacking vehicles,” he said.

The false reporting of hijackings is also of grave concern.

“If the drivers are found giving false statements, they will be charged as well,” said Ndwandwe.

Blue light gangs along the routes have also become an issue.

“If at any time you are approached by a vehicle with blue lights, do not stop but drive to a well-lit area or the closest police station,” said Ndwandwe.

“Do not stop in dark and isolated places at any time.”

According to filed reports, most hijackings occur between Mooi River and Heidelberg.

There are also reports of hijackings closer to Johannesburg or built-up places.

Another plea is for people to refrain from hitchhiking because they become soft targets for criminals.

“You can be fined and prosecuted,” added Ndwandwe.
