Looters descend on crashed biscuit truck as emergency teams race to secure scene near Heidelberg
A truck carrying biscuits crashed after an apparent brake failure at the R23/R549 intersection, sparking alleged looting by members of the public.
The rapid response of law enforcement, emergency services and community safety organisations prevented what could have become a large-scale looting incident after a truck carrying biscuits crashed at the intersection of the R23 and R549 on July 18.
The truck reportedly suffered a brake failure before the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and come to a standstill in a roadside ditch.
The impact damaged the trailer, spilling part of its load and exposing hundreds of boxes of biscuits. Within minutes, members of the public allegedly descended on the truck and began removing goods from the scene.

An emergency call for assistance was immediately issued, triggering a coordinated response from community safety organisations, police, traffic officials and emergency medical services.
Responding teams quickly dispersed the alleged looters, secured the crash scene and established traffic control to ensure paramedics could safely reach the truck occupants.
The swift intervention not only restored order but also enabled emergency personnel to provide medical assistance without further disruption and prevented further theft of the remaining cargo. Among the agencies that responded were Rensburg Forum, the Ratanda Anti-Crime Unit, the SAPS, STS Tactical, ATS, Ambulance Services, Lesedi Traffic and towing services.

Rensburg Forum commended all responding agencies for their teamwork and professionalism in bringing the situation under control.
The organisation also urged members of the public to refrain from looting vehicles involved in accidents, warning that such actions are criminal offences that can hinder emergency operations, place first responders at risk and delay potentially life-saving medical treatment for those injured.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the reported brake failure.
