Walk creates GBFV awareness

Community members were given opportunities to express themselves regarding various forms of abuse.

Ratanda SAPS, Social Crime Prevention and Lesedi Community Safety Forum held a fun walk as part of a GBFV awareness campaign.

The walk was for able and disabled community members to show their concerns regarding treatment and discrimination within society.

The purpose of the awareness outreach was to educate and increase public awareness of the plight of GBFV and to mobilise support for the dignity, right of well-being of persons with disabilities and to ensure that the unique challenges faced by these community members are recognised and addressed.

During the outreach, the community was given opportunities to express themselves regarding various forms of abuse including physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse.

Ratanda SAPS corporate communications officer Sergeant Moss Maluleke said, “Protecting disabled people from harm remains the police’s priority. Disabled people should be able to live free from fear or harm and have their rights and choices respected.”

Disabled persons were encouraged to report any form of abuse to authorities and break the silence.
