Tips to prevent theft from a car

Remove detachable radios and the radio’s face when exiting the car.

Heidelberg SAPS station commander Colonel Phiwe Ndwandwe has issued the following safety advice regarding theft out of vehicles.

The police request the public adhere to and implement these measures to curb possible theft from vehicles:

• Do not leave anything lying in sight to prevent possible theft or damage to your vehicle.

• Do not leave your firearm in the glove compartment (cubbyhole) or the vehicle when you park it. Doing so is against the law.

• Ensure all the vehicle’s doors are locked and windows closed when you park.

• Valuable items such as laptops, handbags, shopping bags, cash and cameras should be locked in the boot of your car, out of sight.

• Be aware of people telling you you have a flat tyre. Their intention could be to steal items they can see inside the car.

• Keep the doors locked and windows closed at all times, especially when driving in town.

• Do not use a cellphone unless you have a hands-free kit because it could also lure criminals to your vehicle.

• At night, park in well-lit areas.

• Do not leave your keys in the ignition.

• Remove detachable radios and the radio’s face when exiting the car.

• Try installing an alarm and/or anti-theft device in your car.

• Use parking areas with a parking attendant or supervision/someone patrolling, or try to park in well-populated locations not crowded by bushes or buildings where offenders could hide.
