Earth Owl growing the future

“The uniqueness of what we do is that these ladies go back to their own communities and houses where they apply the skills to grow their vegetable garden.”

Roché Pepler, Santana Pestana and Bea Lubbe are the women from Earth Owl who not only believe in growing healthy vegetables but also in growing the future.

They joined hands with the Rotary Club in Nigel and together they are teaching the local community how to grow their vegetable gardens.

“We believe in the concept of teaching people how to fish rather than giving them a fish,” Pepler said.

She explained that they teach women from the local community how to start a vegetable garden from scratch.
They do skills development on how to prepare the soil, mix compost, plant seedlings and care for the garden until they can pick the vegetables.

Earth Owl, with the help of their sponsors, provide mulch and organic nutrients to the community members who will then apply the skills taught to grow healthy vegetables at home.

Besides the skills development in the community, Earth Owl also assists the community with donations of vegetables from their own crop.

“We deliver vegetables to children’s homes, churches, old age homes and other beneficiaries in need,” Pepler said.

A portion of the proceeds from the vegetables they grow themselves and sell is used for further skills development.

‘Earth Owl growing the future’ is their motto.

“We have a vision to build a future with a good heart and good healthy organic vegetables. When you learn how to fish, you will never go hungry again,” Pepler said.
