Local firefighters off to Canada

Being selected to fight fires is an honour.

Two local firefighters, working with the Fire-Kishugu Joint Venture, are part of a firefighting team on their way to Canada to help with veld fires that might occur during the country’s fire season.

The firefighters are Puleng Lemao and Thabani Moloi. Both are based at the Heidelberg base in the Suikerbos area.

“I am glad that my dream is being realised. I need to learn new things in international wildland firefighting. As a woman, it means we are also getting equal recognition in wildland firefighting. This will be my first deployment to Canada and I am ready to do my best,” said Lemao.

“This is Puleng and Thabani’s opportunity to put shoulder to the wheel as they will be doing a herculean job,” said Parapara Makgahlela, the WOF provincial communications officer for Gauteng.

“This is going to be part of my heritage and to do it in a month that Women’s Day is celebrated makes it extra special,” said Lemao.

“Moloi was honoured with the best male firefighter award for dedication, commitment and execution of duties during his deployment in Canada in 2023 and will be there to guide Puleng during the fire fighting season abroad,” concluded Makgahlela.
