SANBS campaign aims to boost blood donor base

The campaign will focus on raising awareness about the importance of regular blood donations.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) kicked off its summer campaign with a mission to exceed SA’s current blood donor base of 1% on November 5.

By cultivating awareness, boosting blood collections, retaining regular donors and engaging the youth, the SANBS aims to safeguard the blood reserves crucial for emergencies and routine procedures.

The campaign will raise awareness about the importance of regular blood donations to encourage first-time donors to make donating a lifelong practice and teach the public about the reciprocal benefits of giving blood.

Facts about donating blood:

• Donating blood is an act of selfless love and can save lives;

• Each blood donation can save up to three lives. It helps patients undergoing surgery, experiencing trauma, or suffering from diseases like cancer.

• Blood banks need a constant supply to meet emergencies like accidents or natural disasters.

• Donors are given a mini health check, which includes blood pressure, haemoglobin levels and other important health indicators.

Donating blood is a simple way to make a big difference.

The campaign strongly focuses on the youth but invites all South Africans to be regular blood donors.
