New station commander engages Bergsig residents in the fight against crime
"Let's make the neighbourhood better together."

New Heidelberg SAPS station commander Colonel Makgoro Selota started visiting the various sectors of Heidelberg.
During his rounds, he met with residents to discuss their concerns and share his commitment to addressing crime in the area.
Bergsig was Selota’s first stop, where Sector 1 commander Constable Doris Nkosi and Bergsig CPF member George Booker Senior joined him.

Selota addressed residents after they introduced him.
“Crime can be reduced as soon as neighbourhood members and the local police work together. The community members should be the ears and eyes of the police. If everyone works together, it could lead to arrests and take criminals off our streets,” said Selota.
“I have been looking into different statistics and Bergsig is experiencing various burglaries and theft from vehicles lately. Crime is not out of hand as yet in the area, but everyone must unite to prevent criminals from moving in and taking the neighbourhood hostage. We need community members to get involved and be our eyes and ears.”
Community policing is crucial for the police to keep criminals at bay. It is also a means to establish a partnership and to get the community to feel safe in their neighbourhoods.
Selota emphasised the importance of reporting all criminal activities so the police can understand the issues and investigate effectively.
“It is key that the relationship between the CPF and SAPS is strong. This is the first step in crime prevention. And for the CPF to be effective, residents have to become involved.

“There are street WhatsApp groups and each street has its coordinator. Residents need to be on their street groups to share information.
“Do not take the law into your own hands, but work through the various channels to be effective.
“Know who your neighbours are and if you notice any suspicious activities, inform your neighbours and the local police. The first response could come from the neighbours as they are closer than the police, but also notify the police.
“We need to make the neighbourhood better together,” concluded Selota.
