WATCH: Community unites to clean up Heidelberg Cemetery
Heidelberg cemetery has been an area of concern for residents as some graves were unreachable due to the long and overgrown grass.
On April 17, Heidelberg Hope embarked on a massive clean-up project at the Heidelberg Cemetery.
For many, visiting the graves of loved ones is an important ritual and a way to remember, grieve, and feel connected.
However, when tall grass, weeds, and scattered waste make access nearly impossible, this sacred space becomes a place of frustration instead of solace.
The cemetery has been an area of concern for many residents who could not get to the graves of their loved ones due to the long grass and waste that was dumped all over.
The Heidelberg Hope team together with Lesedi Community Centre and local residents all met at the cemetery at 08:00 where they were grouped into teams.
Miss Heidelberg Hope, Shané Maloney also came to help and said that as April is Earth Month, she suggested that members of the community take responsibility for specific graves and clean up the area on a regular basis. This way all can help to keep the cemetery in better condition over time.
The clean-up at the cemetery was one of the large scale clean-up projects Heidelberg Hope will be doing during April.
Heidelberg Hope is continuing in their efforts to restore Heidelberg in cleaning up the town. They have various cleaning projects happening weekly on a Thursday. Spokesperson Nicolene Neveling encouraged the community to get involved.
“The more people help, the more projects we can do to restore out town and attract tourists which is good for local businesses and the economy of the town.”
