A nurse’s practical guide for flu season

Don’t let the flu catch you off guard. Follow nurse Nhlanhla Mofokeng’s tips to boost your defences this season.

As the flu season begins, nurse Nhlanhla Mofokeng from a local hospital shares how people can protect themselves from the flu.

• Get the flu vaccine annually

According to Mofokeng, the flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu or lessen its severity. Immunity builds in about two weeks, so getting vaccinated early in the season is ideal.

She emphasised its importance for healthcare workers, older adults, immunocompromised people, and those with chronic illnesses like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease;

• Practice excellent hand hygiene

She recommended washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Mofokeng advised using alcohol-based hand sanitisers when soap is unavailable and avoiding touching the eyes, nose and mouth;

• Wear a mask in high-risk settings

To lessen the risk of inhaling infectious droplets, Mofokeng advised wearing masks in crowded indoor spaces, clinics and on public transport.

• Keep a safe distance

She recommended avoiding close contact with visibly ill people and staying home for at least 24 hours after a fever ended without medication.

• Disinfect surfaces frequently

Mofokeng recommended cleaning shared surfaces such as door handles, phones, keyboards, and remotes, as the flu virus can survive on these for hours to days, depending on the conditions.

• Boost your immune system

Mofokeng emphasised the importance of a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Staying hydrated, getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are essential for maintaining a strong immune system.

• Know when to seek help

She advised seeing a doctor if symptoms are severe (high fever, shortness of breath, chest pain) or if you are high-risk.
