Ramokgopa and Steenhuisen heading to Karan Beef in Heidelberg amid Foot and Mouth disease outbreak in Gauteng

The MEC and Minister are expected to meet with veterinary teams, Karan Beef executives, and local stakeholders to evaluate biosecurity measures and reinforce government’s commitment to safeguarding food security and animal health.

In response to the recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) at Karan Beef’s Heidelberg feedlot, Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, are on route to the facility this morning (Monday) to conduct an urgent oversight visit.

The visit comes amid growing concerns over the spread of FMD in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and most recently North West province.

The visit is said to commence with a briefing by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD)’s Veterinary Services Unit.

HERAUT will be in attendance.
