SASSA starts using fingerprints and face scans for grants
From September 1, all applicants and existing beneficiaries must provide fingerprints or facial scans as part of efforts to curb fraud and ensure secure payments.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will introduce mandatory biometric enrolment at all offices from September 1, a change that will directly affect grant beneficiaries nationwide.
The new system will capture either fingerprints or facial recognition when you apply for or renew a grant.
This is part of SASSA’s effort to prevent fraud, ensure that every grant is paid to the correct person, and reduce errors in the system.
What this means for beneficiaries:
• New applicants: Anyone applying for a grant after September 1 will need to provide their biometrics (fingerprint or facial scan). Applications without biometrics will be flagged for review, and applicants will be asked to capture their details before payments are finalised.
• Existing beneficiaries: If you already receive a grant, you may be called in during future reviews to capture your biometrics. This will become part of your proof of life to confirm that you are still eligible.
• More secure payments: The system will protect genuine beneficiaries from fraudsters who try to claim using fake or stolen IDs.
• Faster processing: Biometric enrolment should reduce duplicate applications and make the grant system more efficient.
SASSA CEO Themba Matlou confirmed that the system is ready to roll out, after months of preparation and staff training.
“It is all systems go for the implementation,” he said.
