Ratanda celebrates its first Lesedi Gay Pride
The LGBTQIA community in Ratanda made history with the first Lesedi Gay Pride, bringing colour and a message of acceptance to the community.
The LGBTQIA community in Ratanda held its first Lesedi Gay Pride on October 4.
The event began with a march along Blesbok Street and concluded at Sol’s Cafe, where participants gathered to celebrate diversity and unity.
Organiser Jappie Sthando Tshabalala (46) said the event’s goal was to raise awareness and educate the community about sexual orientation and acceptance.
“We started our organisation many years ago, but this was the first time we hosted a gay pride in our community. The response was overwhelming, and we are immensely grateful to our ward councillor for the support,” said Tshabalala.
He also highlighted ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQIA in the community.

“Some of us are still victimised, and it is difficult to report such cases because police often do not take us seriously. We believe they need proper training to handle such matters. Parents should also support their children regardless of their sexual orientation,” he said.
“The organisation plans to host more workshops and awareness campaigns in schools, churches, and the community. We are also appealing for sponsors and for support to continue.”
Thomas Mncube (25), who identifies as openly gay, shared his hopes for a more accepting society.
“I believe that love has no gender or colour. We are tired of homophobic people taking out their issues on us. I also urge healthcare workers to treat us with respect. We deserve the same care and response as everyone else,” Mncube said.
