Alra Park parent (71) helps learners by mending their uniforms

From hand-sewing tears to restoring dignity, Macy Dlalisa is proving that a little kindness goes a long way for schoolchildren.

Alra Park resident and parent Macy Dlalisa (71) is proving that kindness never goes out of style.

A parent at John Vorster High School, she spends her days mending and cleaning worn school uniforms for needy learners, giving each garment and each child a fresh start.

What began as a small act of compassion has grown into a mission to restore dignity and confidence to learners who depend on the school’s clothes bank.

It all began when Macy’s son, Aubrey, brought home a friend one day.

Seeing the state of the learner’s uniform, Macy offered to wash it, and upon closer inspection, noticed several tears.

That evening, she stayed up late to mend the uniform by hand and ensure it was clean and ready for school the next day.

A few days later, another of Aubrey’s friends arrived with similar needs, and Macy again stepped in to help.

From that moment on, she decided to open her door to any learner from John Vorster High School who needed help with school uniform repairs.

“I do believe every child deserves to go to school feeling proud and confident, not ashamed because their clothes are torn,” said Macy.

“Each child has dignity and self-worth. If I can help lift that burden, then I am happy to do so.”

Macy does not own a sewing machine and does all repairs by hand. It does not dampen her spirits, and she’s now offering her services to learners from nearby schools as well.

Macy is calling on the community to join her in her mission. Whether it’s donating a sewing machine, helping with repairs or simply spreading the word, every contribution counts.
