Heidelberg Hospital leads fight against diabetes with sports and wellness day
Heidelberg Hospital marked World Diabetes Day with a dynamic sports and wellness programme at the SA Army Gymnasium, bringing staff, partners, and community members together for diabetes awareness, education and healthy living.
Heidelberg Hospital hosted a World Diabetes Day Sports event on November 14, at the South African Heidelberg Army Gymnasium, bringing partner institutions and community members together for a day focused on diabetes education, awareness and physical activity.
The programme opened with an address from the CEO, Dr Itumeleng Molatlhegi, who officially launched the event.
“World Diabetes Day is not just on the calendar, it is a reminder of our responsibility to prioritise prevention, early detection and continuous education. I am grateful to everyone who joined us today, especially those who travelled from far. Your participation shows the strength of our partnerships and shared commitment to building a healthier community,” she said.
The educational session that followed included a presentation by Dr Lucky Mahlake, medical officer in the casualty department.

He explained the symptoms of diabetes, stressed the need for early detection and encouraged staff to undergo regular screenings.
“Events like this help us to equip our staff with the knowledge they need to recognise symptoms early and support patients more effectively. Regular check-ups and mindful daily choices truly make a difference,” he said.
Dietician Mapule Makgoba of the Allied Department delivered a motivating message about healthy living and long-term management.

“A diabetes diagnosis is not the end; it is the beginning of a new chapter where informed choices can transform a person’s entire life. Healthy habits are built one step at a time. Whether it’s choosing better meals or walking more each day, small changes accumulate into long-term health. With support and discipline, anyone living with diabetes can thrive,” she said.
A series of sports activities, including soccer, netball, aerobics and wellness exercises, formed the energetic core of the event.

The day concluded with a medal ceremony. Heidelberg Hospital claimed first place in soccer, while the netball match ended in a friendly draw, with both teams receiving medals. All partner institutions were also acknowledged for their participation and support.
