Ratanda teen shines as Kgoro ya Thuto’s face of Secondary Schools RSA Finalist

Seventeen-year old Keabetswe Mtimkhulu from Ratanda is proudly representing Kgoro ya Thuto Secondary School at the Face of Secondary Schools RSA competition.

A 17-year-old learner from Ratanda, Keabetswe Mtimkhulu, has been selected to represent Kgoro ya Thuto Secondary School at the Face of Secondary Schools RSA competition, a milestone he describes as a dream fulfilled.

Mtimkhulu, who is openly gay, said the news came as an emotional and empowering moment.

“I was so happy when I was told that I would get the chance to represent my school. This opportunity means a lot to me because many pageants don’t allow people like us, who are openly gay, to participate.

“So for me, this feels like a dream that has finally come true. My teachers have supported me since Grade Eight. They accepted me the way I am, and that helped me to express myself and take part in things like public speaking and debate. High school shaped me into the person I am today,” he said.

Mtimkhulu also shared a message of encouragement for LGBTQ+ learners facing challenges with self-confidence and acceptance.

“Being different doesn’t close any doors and is the best thing because you light up the room with your rainbow when you walk in. So, dust off that crown and fix it. You will not be shaken by any criticism. It’s time for our township to be recognised, and I know I will represent them very well. I stand firm in what I want, and I’m a very good competitor,” he said.

Mtimkhulu hopes to pursue a career in modelling and pageantry.

“My dream is to be on big stages, major pageants, and on runways. Entering competitions at a young age moves me closer to those dreams. It taught me confidence, and confidence will get me there.

“I would really appreciate any help with preparations for the pageant. Ticket sales will close next week. The finals will take place on December 14 at the Mogale City Centenary venue in Krugersdorp,” he said.
