Community rallies behind Ratanda teen as suspect declines bail in GBV case

Heidelberg residents packed the magistrate's court in a powerful show of support for a Ratanda teenager allegedly raped and nearly killed by a local taxi driver. The case is unfolding during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

The Heidelberg community turned out in large numbers at the Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court on December 1, as the bail hearing of a taxi driver accused of the rape and attempted murder of a Ratanda teenager got underway.

Members of the Heidelberg District and Taxi Association, local political parties, community activists, and residents filled the courtroom to capacity, demonstrating strong solidarity with the young survivor and her family.

The accused, a driver of one of the small local taxis, allegedly attacked the teenager in an incident that deeply shocked residents across Heidelberg and Ratanda.

In a united stance, the HDTA issued a formal statement condemning the attack and expressing unwavering support for the victim.

The case comes at a significant time, as South Africa observes 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, a global campaign held annually from November 25 to December 10.

The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and strengthening the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.

Community members who attended the hearing said it was especially important to stand together during this period when the fight against GBVF is in the national spotlight.

Speaking outside the court, a family spokesperson said the family remains determined to stay strong through the ordeal.

“The child is going through so much, but she is strong. As a family, we are doing everything we can to support her. She is ready to face her attacker and fight this battle. We will be with her every step of the way.

“We want justice not just for her, but for every young girl who has suffered in silence. What happened to her should never happen to anyone else,” he said.

During the appearance, the suspect informed the magistrate that he did not wish to apply for bail.

The case was remanded to April 13, 2026, for further investigation and court processes.
