Rensburg residents warned to be on high alert as gate motor thefts become rife
Rensburg residents are urged to tighten security after a sharp rise in gate motor thefts, with criminals targeting poorly protected properties during the early morning hours
Residents of Rensburg have been urged to heighten security at their homes following a worrying surge in gate motor thefts that has turned what were once isolated incidents into a near-daily crime trend.
Community safety structures report that almost one gate motor is being stolen every night, with most incidents occurring during the early morning hours between 01:00 and 04:00.
Thefts have also been recorded outside these times, indicating that criminals are operating with increasing confidence.
According to community safety role players, perpetrators are deliberately targeting properties with minimal security, taking advantage of poor lighting, limited visibility and unsecured gates. Homes where gate motors are poorly protected are reportedly being prioritised by criminals.
One of the most common methods being used involves lifting gates off their tracks, and a lack of anti-lift brackets is said to make gates particularly vulnerable.
Residents are advised to ensure gates are fitted with anti-brackets or guide rollers, are properly aligned and maintained, and cannot be forced upward.
Safety officials warn that failing to secure the gate itself can render even a well-protected motor ineffective. In response to the spikes in thefts, residents are encouraged to install anti-theft cages or steel enclosures for gate motors, securely anchored into concrete.
Additional deterrents include tamper-proof bolts, welded mounting plates, vibration sensors linked to alarm systems, and visible warning signage indicating that the motor is protected or alarmed.
Improving visibility around properties has also been highlighted as a key preventative measure.
Residents are urged to remove overgrown vegetation near gates and along sidewalks, as these provide hiding places for criminals.
The installation of wall-mounted lighting and motion-activated lights near gate motors and driveways is strongly recommended.
Community safety groups are calling on residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity immediately and maintain communication with neighbours and local safety structures.
Authorities believe that a coordinated community response can significantly reduce the number of thefts.
