Panyaza Lesufi hands over title deeds to residents in Lesedi Local Municipality

Families in Lesedi celebrated a major milestone on March 13 as the Gauteng Provincial Government handed over title deeds to qualifying beneficiaries, giving residents legal ownership of their homes and renewed hope for a secure future.

Panyaza Lesufi, Premier of Gauteng, together with Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara, on 13 March handed over title deeds to qualifying beneficiaries in Ratanda as part of the SeritiSaka programme.

The initiative aims to ensure that residents receive legal ownership of the homes they occupy, providing families with long-term security, stability, and the pride that comes with owning property.

Lesufi said the programme plays a critical role in restoring dignity and empowering communities across the province.

“Handing over title deeds restores dignity to our people. For many families, this document represents years of waiting and hoping for the day when they can officially call the place they live in their own,” said Lesufi.

“Through programmes like SeritiSaka, we are ensuring that residents of Lesedi have legal ownership of their homes and the security that comes with it. It also allows families to build generational wealth and a stable future for their children,” he added.

Motara said the department remains committed to addressing historical housing challenges while ensuring that residents receive the ownership they deserve.

“Title deeds represent stability, opportunity, and recognition for families who have lived in their homes for many years without formal ownership. When we hand over these title deeds, we are giving residents the legal protection they need and opening doors for them to use their homes as assets that can benefit their families in the long term,” she said.

Beneficiaries who received their title deeds described the moment as emotional and life-changing.

One resident, Selina Khumalo (53), said the document brought a deep sense of relief and pride to her family.

“For many years we lived in this house, but we did not have the official document to prove that it belonged to us.

Today is a very special day for my family because we finally have that security. It means that no one can take this home away from us, and we can now pass it on to our children with confidence,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Thabang Motloung (48), said receiving the title deed felt like the end of a long journey.

“I have waited for this moment for a long time. When my name was called and I received the title deed, I felt proud and emotional at the same time. It shows that government has not forgotten about us, and it gives us hope that our children will grow up in a home that truly belongs to our family,” he said.

Thandeka Mngomezulu (65) said the title deed represents a new chapter for future generations.

“This is not just a piece of paper for me. It represents a future for my children and grandchildren. Now that we have legal ownership of our home, we know that our family will always have a place to live and something valuable that can be passed down to the next generation,” she said.
