Water crisis in Heidelberg as pipe bursts and power failure disrupt supply

Several Heidelberg areas are without water after pipe bursts and a power outage at the Emmasdal pump station, with residents urged to use water sparingly as repairs continue.

Residents in several parts of Heidelberg have been left without water or facing critically low supply following infrastructure failures reported on March 26.

Lesedi Local Municipality confirmed that two pipe bursts in town have disrupted water distribution, while a power outage at the Emmasdal pump station has further worsened the situation by halting pumping operations.

Municipal technicians are currently on-site attending to the pipe repairs, while electricians are working to restore electricity at the pump station to allow the system to resume normal functioning.

The municipality’s latest reservoir readings indicate that Heidelberg Command and Emmasdal reservoirs are at critical levels, while Rensburg reservoirs remain stable.

Areas affected by the outages and low pressure include Heidelberg Extensions 23 and 26, parts of Obed Nkosi, and suburbs such as Bergsig, Berg en Dal, Overkruin, and Jordanpark.

Residents have been urged to use water sparingly as efforts continue to stabilize the system. Residents can contact the municipal call centre on 016 466 1901 for further assistance.
