Mixed reactions from residents as Lesedi Municipality announces 9% electricity hike

The Lesedi Local Municipality has approved a 9.01% electricity tariff increase, effective July 1, 2026. Residents warn the hike will strain households and small businesses, while calling for greater transparency and support.

Heidelberg residents are preparing for higher electricity costs after the Lesedi Local Municipality announced a 9.01% tariff increase, approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.

The new rates will take effect on July 1, and remain in place until June 30, 2027.

The municipality said the increase follows NERSA approval, which regulates electricity pricing across the country, and encouraged residents and stakeholders to visit municipal offices for more information or clarification about the new tariffs.

The announcement has sparked concern among residents.

“This will hit small businesses hard. Electricity costs are already cutting into our profits, and now another hike makes it even tougher. How are ordinary families supposed to cope with this because the bills are already high every month,” he said.

Elsie Msimang said this increase will affect many families because they are not employed.

“This is very unfair because some of us are not working and sorely depend on a R370 social grant .Every time electricity goes up, it feels like we’re being punished for simply living,” she said.

“We need transparency because we have to know where is our money going, and why are increases happening so frequently. The municipality must do more to support families. These increases make life even harder for those already struggling,” he said.
