Lesedi Municipality launches mass indigent registration roadshow

Residents in Ratanda turned out in numbers as Lesedi Local Municipality began its mass indigent registration drive on May 4, with officials urging qualifying households to apply and outlining the documents needed to access vital municipal support.

The Lesedi Local Municipality officially launched its Mass Indigent Registration roadshow on May 4 at the Ratanda New Hall, marking the start of a key outreach initiative to assist qualifying households across the municipality.

The first phase of the programme focused on Wards 1, 2, 3, and 4, with councillors present to oversee the process and assist residents. The initiative seeks to ensure that indigent households are properly registered in order to access essential municipal services and relief measures.

Residents responded positively, with many arriving early to take advantage of the opportunity. Community member Thembi Dlamini (44) welcomed the initiative, saying it would bring much-needed relief to struggling families.

“This programme is very important for people in our community. Many households are under financial pressure, so this support will make a real difference,” she said.

Thabo Mokoena ( 48) highlighted the accessibility of the process.

“Having the services brought closer to us makes things much easier. Not everyone can travel far or understand the system, so this helps a lot,” he said.

Sarah Mahlangu 62) encouraged others to participate before the roadshow moves to other wards.

“I would urge everyone who qualifies to come and register. This kind of support can help families manage their monthly costs,” she said.

The municipality has outlined the required documents for registration. Applicants must provide proof of gross household income, which must not exceed R5 264 per month.

They are also required to submit proof of ownership or residence, including documentation confirming account liability, such as in cases of child-headed households or where the property is registered in the name of a deceased person.

Additional requirements include, where applicable, a letter of authority, certified copies of identity documents for the applicant and all household occupants, a pension certificate or card for pensioners, and a municipal account.

Employed applicants must also provide three months’ bank statements, along with a sworn affidavit.
