Nigel parishioners lead hands-on cemetery clean-up to restore dignity and safety
Parishioners from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church joined forces with the Nigel Community Policing Forum on May 2 to clear overgrown sections of the local cemetery in a community-driven effort focused on respect, safety, and renewal.
In a show of unity and community spirit, approximately 30 parishioners from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Nigel gathered on May 2 to clean and restore sections of the local cemetery.
Armed with brush cutters, weed-eaters, rakes, brooms and brushes, the volunteers worked tirelessly to clear overgrown vegetation that had accumulated over years of neglect.
The clean-up focused primarily on the Roman Catholic section, while also extending to surrounding grave areas to improve accessibility and dignity for visitors.
The initiative was supported by the Nigel CPF, whose members maintained a visible presence to ensure safety throughout the morning.

The CPF had earlier called on residents via their WhatsApp platform to support efforts aimed at creating a safer environment for those visiting the cemetery. Despite the physically demanding nature of the work, which continued for several hours, the atmosphere remained positive and reflective.
Parishioners of all ages took part, sharing memories of loved ones laid to rest and strengthening the sense of community.
Father Stephen Ggita, who accompanied the group, highlighted the deeper significance of the initiative.
“This effort is about more than cleaning; it is about restoring dignity and showing respect to those who have gone before us. It reflects our shared responsibility as a community to care for sacred spaces and to support one another,” he said.
