Suikerbos Voortrekkers empower youth with life skills, faith and adventure
The Suikerbos Voortrekker Commando is helping children develop confidence, leadership and practical life skills through outdoor activities, faith-based learning and community values in Heidelberg.
Die Voortrekkers continue to make a positive impact on young people in Heidelberg through the Suikerbos Voortrekker Commando’s weekly programmes focused on leadership, faith, outdoor education and practical life skills.
Founded in 1931, Die Voortrekkers was established as an Afrikaans youth organisation aimed at preserving the healthy traditions of the Voortrekkers while encouraging young people to live actively in nature and grow spiritually.

According to Suikerbos Commando leader Dawie de Villiers, the organisation’s purpose extends far beyond outdoor recreation.
“Die Voortrekkers is about helping children grow into responsible and confident young people. Through practical activities, leadership opportunities and outdoor experiences, we teach values that can guide them throughout their lives.

“Children participating in the programme are exposed to a variety of practical life skills, including good manners, respect, telephone etiquette, computer safety, cycling, basic first aid and leadership development,” he said.
De Villers said children are also taught survival and outdoor skills such as building shelters, cooking in the veld and tracking, while creative and technical activities like arts and crafts, music, singing and working with tools are also encouraged.

“We want our youth to become independent, disciplined and willing to serve others. At the same time, we help them develop a love for nature and an appreciation for teamwork and responsibility. We also host regional camps to expose them to activities such as horse riding, snorkelling, and even 4×4 driving experiences for matric learners,” he said.
De Villiers added that faith remains at the centre of the programme, and emphasised the importance of Christian values and environmental stewardship.

“We teach our children that God entrusted us with the responsibility to care for the earth and for one another. Spending time outdoors reminds us of the greatness of God and encourages respect for nature.
Children who attend the gatherings regularly grow particularly in self confidence, leadership abilities andself-discipline. Many members are also recognised in their schools for their leadership potential,” he said.
