Free weekly community run aims to build a healthier
A new fitness initiative is encouraging Heidelberg residents to get active, meet new people and strengthen community ties. The Heidelberg Moves Together Community Run, hosted by Ability X Performance Institute, offers free weekly runs and workouts for people of all ages and fitness levels.
A new community fitness initiative is encouraging residents of all ages and fitness levels to get active, connect with others and embrace a healthier lifestyle through a free weekly community run.
The Heidelberg Moves Together Community Run, powered by Ability X Performance Institute, takes place every Saturday morning and is open to everyone, regardless of their fitness experience.
According to Ability X Performance Institute co-founder Lelanie Pretorius, the initiative was inspired by a desire to create an accessible fitness platform that brings the community together.
The entire inspiration revolves around a community coming together. This initiative is designed to bring together people who are already passionate about fitness and exercise. While we are a gym with paying members, we want the people of Heidelberg to have the opportunity to exercise as part of a community, simply for the sake of health, fitness, and fellowship, while making it accessible to anyone and everyone.
“Gym memberships are often expensive or do not cater for entire families, including children.
“Other community runs are situated quite far and still require annual membership fees. This is in the middle of town and free to anyone who wants to get moving,” she said.
Pretorius added that participants can choose between 1km, 3km and 5km routes, allowing beginners, walkers, experienced runners and families to take part at their own pace.
“When we address challenges like finances, location and fitness levels, and offer solutions to them, we are able to reach a greater number of people and give them the opportunity to be part of a community while attending to one of the biggest health factors.
“Exercising and social connection have for many years shown some of the greatest impacts on health, longevity and quality of life. A lot of people in Heidelberg are already exercising and we would like to offer a platform where it can be done together. It builds strong connections, it’s good for health, it’s good for business, and it’s a fantastic way to challenge yourself in a healthy way,” she said.
Pretorius said participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a workout of the day after completing their route.
“Participants can expect energetic vibes. We try to get them in the mood as much as possible. All three route options have an Ability X coach or experienced member guiding the route and making sure everyone stays on track and motivated.
“The Parking Lot WOD is an equipment-free mini programme given as soon as they finish their route and includes bodyweight strength training to complement the cardio aspect of the run.
“The goal is to reach many more people. We would like to make use of different locations every now and then and get creative with some outdoor equipment to keep it fun and engaging,” she said.
