Heidelberg SPCA’s Mandela Day fundraiser attracts strong community support for animal welfare

The Heidelberg SPCA welcomed scores of residents to its Mandela Day fundraising shopping event on July 18, as the community came together to support the organisation’s work in caring for vulnerable animals.

Held at the local society, the event featured a wide selection of pre-loved books, clothing, household items, toys and accessories, giving shoppers the opportunity to find affordable bargains while supporting a meaningful cause.

Freshly prepared boerewors rolls and cooldrinks were also on sale, creating a warm and festive atmosphere throughout the morning.

All proceeds from the event will go towards helping the SPCA provide food, shelter, veterinary care and rehabilitation for abandoned, neglected and abused animals in the Heidelberg area.

Heidelberg SPCA chairperson Petro Coetzee thanked the community for embracing the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day by supporting the fundraiser. “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated goods, volunteered their time and came out to support us.

“Every purchase made on the day will help us continue caring for the animals that rely on our shelter. Mandela Day reminds us that each person has the power to make a difference, and the generosity shown by our community has demonstrated exactly that. We are truly overwhelmed by the support,” she said.

Coetzee added that fundraising initiatives such as the shopping day are essential in helping the organisation meet its daily operational costs.

“Running an animal welfare organisation requires ongoing financial support. Community events like this not only raise much-needed funds but also create awareness about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare and the important role the SPCA plays in protecting animals.

“We encourage residents to continue supporting us throughout the year by adopting, donating, volunteering or attending our fundraising events,” she said.

Anelisa Mkhonta said the fundraiser was an enjoyable way to honour Mandela Day while supporting a worthy cause.

“I came looking for a few books and ended up finding several great bargains. Knowing that my purchases will help care for animals at the SPCA made the experience even more worthwhile,” she said.

Bill Johnson praised the community spirit shown throughout.

“The volunteers were incredibly welcoming, and it was wonderful to see so many people supporting the SPCA. Events like this remind us that small acts of kindness can make a real difference,” he said.
