Heidelberg Hospital staff honour Mandela’s legacy with 67 minutes of kindness
Staff from Heidelberg Hospital's X-ray Unit served hot tea, coffee and fresh scones to patients on July 15, demonstrating that compassion and patient care extend beyond medical treatment as Mandela Day approaches.
Staff members from the X-ray Unit at Heidelberg Hospital marked Mandela Day early by dedicating 67 minutes to serving patients hot tea, coffee and freshly baked scones on July 15.
The initiative formed part of the hospital’s commitment to honour the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela ahead of Mandela Day on July 18, which will be observed under the theme, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty.”
Patients waiting for medical services were treated to warm refreshments, offering comfort during the cold winter weather while they waited for their appointments.

Chief radiographer Prelena Sewnandan said the initiative reflected the team’s belief that patient care extends beyond medical treatment.
“Many of our patients arrive at the hospital very early and spend time waiting for their appointments in the cold. As a team, we decided to dedicate our 67 minutes to serving them hot tea, coffee and freshly baked scones as a small gesture of kindness in honour of Tata Nelson Mandela. We hope it brought them some warmth and reminded them that they are cared for,” she said.
