Meals on Wheels marks Mandela Day with soup and sandwiches for learners
Meals on Wheels Community Service NCSA honoured Mandela Day by serving soup and sandwiches to learners at Laerskool AG Visser in Rensburg, with organisers saying acts of kindness should extend far beyond the annual 67-minute campaign.
Meals on Wheels Community Service NCSA celebrated the spirit of Mandela Day by providing warm soup and sandwiches to learners at Laerskool AG Visser in Rensburg on July 22.
The outreach, led by the organisation’s Heidelberg office, took place between 09:00 and 09:30 to ensure that the school’s academic programme was not disrupted.
While the learners received a nourishing meal, the initiative also highlighted the importance of serving communities in the spirit of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
Area director, Telana de Winnaar, said Mandela Day serves as a reminder that everyone has the power to make a meaningful difference, no matter how small the act of kindness.
“Mandela Day is about more than dedicating 67 minutes of service because it is about embracing a lifestyle of compassion, dignity and caring for those around us.
“At Meals on Wheels, we believe that every meal we serve is a message of hope and love to someone who may be facing difficult circumstances. Today was an opportunity to share that hope with the children of Laerskool AG Visser while honouring the values that Nelson Mandela stood for. We are grateful to everyone who made this outreach possible and encourage more people to become involved in serving their communities throughout the year,” she said.
Marthie Grobler of the Heidelberg Kitchen said giving back is at the heart of the organisation’s mission and remains one of the most rewarding aspects of their work.
“Seeing the smiles on people’s faces reminds us why we do what we do. Giving back is not measured by the size of the donation or the amount of time you have, but by the willingness to care for others.
“Every bowl of soup and every sandwich shared today represents kindness, compassion and the belief that no one should be forgotten. We hope our outreach inspires others to look for opportunities to support those in need because together we can make our communities stronger and more caring,” she said.
To protect the privacy and safety of the learners, no children were photographed during the event.
Meals on Wheels Community Service NCSA continues to provide meals, care and support to vulnerable individuals and families across the Heidelberg area through its ongoing community outreach programmes, reinforcing its commitment to improving lives beyond Mandela Day.
